Multiplying By Multiples of 10 and 100

When you multiply by multiples of 10, you add 1 zero to the product.

When you multiply by multiples of 100, you add 2 zeros to the product.

Examples:

3 x 4 = 12
3 x 40 = 120
3 x 400 = 1,200

5 x 3 = 15
5 x 30 = 150
5 x 300 = 1,500

Distinct Environments

Starting next week, we will begin to study 5 distinct environments.

Check out our Blendspace top see what we've been watching in class this week!

BlendSpace

Desert

Tropical Rainforest

Swamps

Polar Tundra

Rivers and Streams

In class we will be using textbooks, National Geographic resources, video clips, Power Point Presentations, and library books to conduct research for each environment. Each student will be responsible for researching all 5 environments. They will complete a graphic organizer for each.

Topics for each environment include:
  • climate & temperature
  • water
  • plants
  • animals

The research will then be used to create a brochure that they will use to try to persuade people to visit each of these environments.

Final brochures will be completed on the computer and our tentative completion date is Tuesday, November 25th.

How do we affect the environment?

Humans can have both a positive and negative effect on our environment. Unfortunately, we do more bad than good but we have been reading some stories and talking about how we can make improvements. We have also talked about how our perspective of the Earth has changed over the years. Below are some stories we have read and some reflection posters we created. There will be more reflection pieces to come.

Is it inherited/Instinct or Learned/Acquired?

Inherited Traits are traits that are passed down to offspring from parents.

Examples: hair color, eye color, size and shape of facial features, etc.

Instincts in Organisms are behaviors that do not require learning and are done in order to survive.

Examples: baby chicks pecking out of their shells, babies crying when they are hungry, etc.

Instinct in animals is something which is engrained into that animal when it is still developing and hasn't even been born yet. Instinct is thought to be hereditary, passed on from the parents so baby animals instinctively know how to get food from their parents. Although instinctive behaviour is behaviour at a very basic level, without natural instinct many animals simply would not survive as baby birds wouldn't know how to get food from their mother and beavers wouldn't know how to build a dam. Many animals rely on their instincts to sense approaching danger, or when searching for a mate.

Learned behaviors are behaviors that are learned throughout an organisms lifetime.

Examples: riding a bike, walking, sports, gymnastics, animals hunting skills, squirrels cracking nuts

Acquired Traits are traits that are acquired throughout an organisms lifetime.

Examples: length of hair, weight, height, sloths fur appears green over time due to algae growing in it
