Our Solar System has 8 planets. In order from the Sun, those planets are:

Mercury  Venus  Earth  Mars  Jupiter  Saturn  Uranus  Neptune

*Students are expected to know the correct order of the planets but NOT characteristics of each planet.*

How does the Sun effect the Earth?

The sun causes weather conditions on earth (drought, heat waves)
The sun causes evaporation of water on earth
The sun is the source of almost all the energy on earth
Fossil fuels are made from energy stored in organisms that died long ago (coal, oil, natural gases)
The sun makes its own heat and light and the earth receives that heat and light after traveling through space

What are the Reasons for the Seasons?

The 2 main reasons for the seasons are:

1-the tilt of the earth's axis
2-earths revolution around the sun

As we revolve around the sun we get different amounts of sunlight.

Summer = we are tilted towards the sun
Winter = we are tilted away from the sun
Fall and Spring = we are not tilted directly toward or away from the sun

It takes the earth 365 days (1 year) to make one full revolution around the sun.



What Causes Day and Night?

Earth's rotation causes day and night.

It takes the earth 24 hours to rotate once on its axis.







Phases of the Moon

Students are responsible for knowing and identifying the following moon phases:

Full, new, quarter/half, waxing & waning crescent, and waxing & waning gibbons

Full Moon: entire side of the moon is lit


Quarter/Half Moon: half of the moon is lit, opposite sides are lit as the moon goes through its cycle of phases

New Moon: the moon appears to be gone, but ist is just in the darkness, not lit at all

Waxing means that the moon is getting biGGER
Waning means the moon is getting SMAller

What Causes the Ocean's Tides??
How Does The Moon Affect The Ocean Tides

The tides are caused by the pull of the Moon's gravity.

As the moon revolves around earth, it's gravity pulls the ocean water, causing high tide. It creates a bulge on the side of earth. At the same time, the moon's gravity pulls the earth on the other side, creating another bulge.

The bulges stay in the same place as earth rotates through them. Whatever part of earth that is going through the bulge, is experiencing high tide. The areas between the bulges are having low tide.

There are about 12 hours from one high tide to the next high tide.

Fraction Fun






Fractions name a part of a set or whole.







Examples of Numerator and Denominator






Equivalent Fractions






How to make an equivalent fraction

You can multiply or divide BOTH the numerator and the denominator by the SAME number to make an equivalent fraction.

Multiplying makes the numerator and denominator larger, but still equivalent.
Dividing makes the numerator and denominator smaller, but still equivalent. This is also referred to as reducing the fraction to simplest form.

Make an equivalent fraction for 2/5

1. Choose a number to multiply by. I will choose 4. (you can choose ANY number)
2. Multiply BOTH the numerator and the denominator by 4.
3. So 2 x 4 = 8 and 5 x 4 = 20
4. The new equivalent fraction for 2/5 is 8/20

Reduce 36/42 to make an equivalent fraction

1. Figure out which number has BOTH 36 and 42 as multiples
2. For these numbers, the answer would be 6.
3. divide 36 AND 42 by 6
4. So 36 divided by 6 = 6 and 42 divided by 6 = 7
5. The new reduced equivalent fraction is 6/7

Tips for Comparing Fractions

Tip #1
If the numerator is the SAME, compare the denominators.
The SMALLER the denominator, the BIGGER the fraction.

2/3   >    2/8 because the numerator is the same and since 3 is SMALLER than 8, 2/3 is the LARGER fraction.

Tip #2
If the denominator is the SAME, compare the numerator.
The BIGGER the numerator, the BIGGER the fraction.

4/6 > 2/6 because they both have a denominator of 6 and 4 is greater than 2.

Tip #3
If Tip #1 or #2 do not apply, you will need to draw a model/number line to compare.

1/2 > 3/8 because:


1/2 extends farther down the number line making it the LARGER fraction.

Ordering Fractions

Put these fractions in order least to greatest:
                      1/3, 4/6, 2/12

Step 1: Find a common denominator (a denominator that all fractions have in comon)

Think? What # can I divide 3,6,& 12 into evenly?
Answer? 12
The common denominator is 12

Step 2: make equivalent fractions with the new denominator

Change each fraction so the denominator is 12 for all three.

1/3 = 4/12       4/6 = 8/12     2/12 stays the same
(for help making equivalent fractions, see notes above)

Step 3: Put the fractions in order

Least to greatest order would now be:

2/12, 4/12, 8/12

Adding Fractions with LIKE denominators

 
Step 1: Add the numerators ONLY
Step 2: Reduce/Simplify if possible
 
2/8 + 4/8 = 6/8 
 
2 + 4 = 6 and the denominator of 8 remains the same
 
6/8 has both even numbers so you can divide both by 2 to reduce it to 3/4
 
6/12 + 5/12 = 11/12
 
11 is a PRIME number so this fraction cannot be reduced, it is already in simplest form.

Divide by 3 and 6/9 in simplest form is 2/3

Half-Way
 
Students need to be able to quickly recognize when a fraction represents 1/2.

Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators



Step 1: Subtract the numerators ONLY
Step 2: Reduce/Simplify if possible


10/12 - 2/12 = 8/12


10-2 = 8 (numerator) and the denominator of 12 stays the same


8/12 have a common factor of 4 so divide the numerator and denominator by 4 to reduce the fraction to 2/3








Multiplying Fractions


Step 1: multiply the numerators
Step 2: multiply the denominators
Step 3: simplify/reduce if possible




Examples:
3/6 x 7/8 =
numerators: 3 x 7 =21
denominators 6 x 8 = 48
answer is 21/48
This can be reduced by dividing by 3 so the reduced answer is 7/16




Multiplying a fraction by a Whole Number


Option 1: multiply the whole # by the numerator, keeping the denominator the same


5 x 3/6 = (5 x 3)/6 = 15/6 reduces to 5/2


Option 2: put a 1 under the whole number then follow steps 1-3 for multiplying fractions as normal


5 x 3/6 = 5/1 x 3/6 = (5 x 3)/(1 x 6) = 15/6 reduces to 5/2

Magnets are attracted to iron, copper, and certain other metals.

What are they?


A coil of wire wrapped around a metal core, such as an iron bar or nail


What makes them stronger?


The properties of the core (how big it is, what material it is made of)
The size of the energy source or battery
How many coils of wire you wrap around the core, also how tightly wrapped the coils are


What happens when the electricity stops flowing?


When the electricity stops flowing in an electromagnet, it stops being magnetic.

magnetism-the area of magnetic force around a magnet
magnet-any object with magnetic force

Did you Know???


Much of the inside of Earth is made of melted iron which creates a magnetic field that surrounds our planet. Pretty cool!!

Division Equation Vocabulary

Division Strategies

 Division as Repeated Subtraction

42 divided by 7     Repeatedly subtract 7 from 42 until you reach a difference of 0 

42-7= 35
35-7=28
28-7=21
21-7=14
14-7=7
7-7=0

Now count how many times you subtracted 7

You subtracted 6 times, so the quotient (answer to a division equation) is 6.




More Repeated Subtraction, using powerful facts

36 divided by 2

Think powerful! If I know 2 x 1 then I know 2 x 10

So instead of subtracting 2 repeatedly, I can start by subtracting 20

36-20 = 16 (since I subtracted 20, that's the same as 10 two's)

Now think 2 x ?? = 16........ 8!

Subtract 16
16-16 = 0 (Since I subtracted 16, that's the same as 8 two's)

So how many times did I subtract 2? Well, 10 + 8 = 18

So, 36 divided by 2 = 18
