We are bringing our Place Value unit to a close this Tuesday, September 30th. Below is a way for you and your child to study and practice the concepts and skills required for the Unit test next week. We have completed this activity several times in class.
1. Create a 5 digit number (roll dice, use cards, etc. )
2. write the number in expanded form
3. write the # in word form
4. create the # using base ten blocks
5. round the # to the nearest ten, hundreds, thousands, and ten thousands
6. compare the # to 23, 789 (use <,>,or =)
7. compare the # to 76, 298 (use <,>, or =)
8. Put the following numbers in order greatest to least: your #, 45,688, and 46, 239
9. Put the following numbers in order least to greatest: your #, 23, 128, and 83, 234
10. subtract your # from 134, 567
11. add your # to 3, 567
Repeat if necessary!
Share your number below and at least one of the above tasks in the comment section!
This will earn you 3 points on the test!!
I posted my number, too!

We had a great time at the zoo on Friday! We saw. learned about, and touched lots of cool animals! Thanks to all the chaperones who came along and made the trip a success! Check out the pictures from the trip below.
Also, since we are beginning our unit on Classifying Animals as vertebrates or invertebrates, see if you can tell which category some of these cool creatures would belong in! Comment below!!!
Goats
Chickens Monkeys
Leopard
Tortoise
Giraffe Tarantula
Snake Lizard

Ticket Exchange
Comment on what prizes you would like to see in the prize box. Give reasonable suggestions! You can list several ideas and how many tickets you think it should cost. You work hard for tickets so make sure it's something you would want to spend them on!
Have fun!!

LifeBoats
Today in Science we conducted an experiment to see if the capacity of a boat was related to the number of passengers it could hold. Our hypothesis was, the bigger the boat the more people it will hold.
The experiment consisted of multiple step directions, lots of cooperative learning, and the use of several Scienctific tools. (ruler, scissors, Graduated cylinders)
Check out the procedures:
The experiment consisted of multiple step directions, lots of cooperative learning, and the use of several Scienctific tools. (ruler, scissors, Graduated cylinders)
Check out the procedures:
Procedure:
1. Measure up from
the bottom of the cup to 2cm and draw a line. Using scissors cut the cup to
this height. Then cut a cup to 3 cm high and the third to 4 cm high. Name each
boat and record this on the “Lifeboat Inspection” sheet.
2. Using a
graduated cylinder fill each boat with water to its top. Record this amount as
the boats capacity on the “Lifeboat Inspection” sheet. Empty each boat of water
and dry it out.
3. Place the first
boat into the water. Carefully load pennies (passengers) into the lifeboats one
at a time. Remember that once the
boat sinks it has one too many passengers. Record the number of pennies
the boat can hold on the “Lifeboat Inspection” sheet.
4. Repeat this
process for each boat and record data.
5. Using data make
a graph of your results on the “Lifeboat Inspection” sheet.
This is how we recorded our data:

This was a super fun experiment and the kids did a great job with all the directions! They were amazed at how many pennies even the smallest boat could hold.
