Math Blocks Rock!

Today in Math students practiced creating multi-digit numbers with place value blocks. Once they created the number they had to compare them using <, >, or =. We discussed several strategies for comparing.
1. Using the Place Value Blocks
2. Number Stacking
3.Using a Number Line

**Please check the Math notebook for notes on these strategies**

Next week we will order numbers so a good knowledge of comparing is essential. Practice at home by finding numbers around the house or in magazines or newspapers, then comparing them! Make it fun!!

Flipping For Science!

Today we practiced making predictions. Student were going to flip a penny 40 times and record whether it landed on heads or tails. But before they flipped, they had to predict how many of each they would get. Then after flipping, they had to analyze the results and see of their predictions were right. We are learning that your predictions are not always right, and that's ok! But we know that we need to make logical predictions based on facts and research. Some students results actually matched their predictions exactly! We were learning, but I'm still convinced they just really liked flipping the penny in the air. :)

Our first Science test will be Wednesday, September 3rd. All students will receive a study guide Friday, August 29th. Please review your students notes and the study guide each night. Also, if you sign the study guide by test day, students can earn an extra 5 points on the test. Thanks in advance for your support!!

Could You be on Survivor?

In keeping with the theme of this week, today we continued to talk about being good leaders. We watched a video clip of a competition on the TV show Survivor. Tribes were blindfolded and were being directed by the leader of their tribe. The leader was responsible for navigating his tribe through a maze that ultimately led them to bags containing puzzle pieces. Once all bags were found, the leader had to solve the puzzle using the pieces in the bags. After watching the video, we discussed how successful or unsuccessful the  tribe leaders (Rob & Stephanie) were. Here are a few of the students responses. Enjoy!

First Week of 4th Grade

We have been having a blast this week! I have loved getting to know all these sweet students. We have been focusing on what makes a good leader and how we can become good leaders both in and out of the classroom. We have watched videos and discussed what characteristics a good leader needs to be successful. Yesterday we did an experiment called Discovering the Colors. This required great team work and communication, both are skills needed by a great leader. If the group followed instructions correctly, they ended up with cups of water all the colors of the rainbow! I am happy to say most of us were successful! It was very interesting to see how students work together to achieve a goal. It was a lot of fun and I think we learned a lot about each other.
