Magnetism

Our Magnetism Test is scheduled for this Thursday. Please study your child's notes as well as the information below.

Opposite Poles attract each other.
So a north & south pole or a south & north pole.

Like Poles repel each other. So a north pole & another north pole or a south pole & another south pole.

Magnets can either attract or repel each other.

Magnets are attracted to iron, copper, and certain other metals.

Electromagnets

Electromagnets

What are they?

A coil of wire wrapped around a metal core, such as an iron bar or nail

What makes them stronger?

The properties of the core (how big it is, what material it is made of)
The size of the energy source or battery
How many coils of wire you wrap around the core, also how tightly wrapped the coils are

What happens when the electricity stops flowing?

When the electricity stops flowing in an electromagnet, it stops being magnetic.

Vocabulary Review

repel-to push away
attract-to pull toward
poles-the parts of a magnet where the magnetic force is the strongest
magnetism-the area of magnetic force around a magnet
magnet-any object with magnetic force
electromagnet-A coil of wire wrapped around a metal core, such as an iron bar or nail
compass-an instrument that uses the Earth's magnetic field to help people find directions

Did you Know???

Much of the inside of Earth is made of melted iron which creates a magnetic field that surrounds our planet. Pretty cool!!
